Weets Hill Walking Route

A Gentle Countryside Walk with Views Across Pendle & The Yorkshire Dales

This gentle and peaceful walking route offers beautiful views across Pendle Hill and the Yorkshire Dales, taking you through a varied landscape of lush pastureland, limestone countryside and open moorland.

Barnoldswick has a long and fascinating history dating back to Viking times, with strong links to the canal and textile industries. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs through the town and provides a scenic setting for walks, while Bancroft Mill — home to a historic 1915 steam engine — can sometimes be visited during the summer months.

Surrounded by rolling farmland and countryside, Barnoldswick is a great base for exploring the local area, offering easy access to walking routes as well as modern amenities including parks, shops and leisure facilities.

This route, originally featured as part of Pendle Borough Council’s Pendle’s Three Peaks in Undiscovered Lancashire walking guide, leads up Weets Hill and rewards walkers with impressive views across the surrounding landscape.

Letcliffe Park Car Park
(South end of Barnoldswick – signposted from the B6251)

Facilities at Letcliffe Park include picnic areas, public toilets and wide-reaching views of the countryside.

Step-by-Step Directions

1.
Begin at the Letcliffe Park car park and walk down towards the road, turning right to follow the Pendle Way sign. Take care along this section as there is no pavement for a short distance. After around 100 metres, turn left onto Gillians Lane and continue past Bancroft Mill, staying on the main road as it passes residential properties.

2.
Take the first left onto Moorgate Road and continue uphill as the road becomes Folly Lane. As you gain height, there are excellent views of the surrounding countryside, with Ingleborough visible in the distance on clear days.

3.
Around 100 metres beyond Stanbridge Farm, leave Folly Lane by crossing the stile on the right and follow the path running alongside the wall. The route continues across open fields, gradually becoming a clearer grassy path bordered by reeds and natural vegetation.

After approximately half a mile you will reach a large cairn marking the site of a beacon used for special occasions. Continue along the wall before branching off towards a smaller cairn, where the trig point comes into view.

4.
From the summit, enjoy far-reaching views including Pendle Hill to the west and Boulsworth Hill to the south-east. On a clear day, you may also spot the Yorkshire Three Peaks — Ingleborough, Pen-y-ghent and Whernside.

To begin your descent, bear left back towards the wall and continue to Weets House Farm. Leave the Pendle Way at this point and turn right, following the track downhill through a gate.

5.
Continue along the track, passing through another gate onto a narrow lane bordered by wildflowers before joining a wider track. Follow this straight ahead until you reach the road at Lane Side Farm, where you should turn right onto Brogden Lane.

6.
After passing Flass House, cross the wooden stile on the right and follow the Pendle Way signs towards Jack House Farm. Continue along the track with the stream to your left until you reach the farm buildings.

Pass a cottage to cross another stile into the field, keeping the wall on your right. Follow the path through the fields until returning to Moorgate Road, then retrace your steps via Bancroft Mill back to Letcliffe Park.
